After a lengthy, exhausting chase of Brock Lesnar culminated at SummerSlam, Roman Reigns is finally WWE Universal Champion.
The question now is – who will be first to take a swipe at the new man at the top of the mountain on Monday Night Raw?
Lesnar’s controversial reign began all the way back at Wrestlemania 33 in Orlando in 2017 and, almost ever since, Reigns had made no secret of wanting to be the main to bring The Beast to his knees.
Seth Rollins::
This one may be a little way off now thanks to Rollins’ Intercontential championship win in the Big Apple, but champion versus champion matches are hardly rare, so WWE may well decide to reward The Architect for the hottest streak of his career for a main event programme on Raw against his former Shield brother. The two have been sworn enemies and the best of pals in the past, so this would be a great way to blur that line once again with Raw’s biggest prize at stake.
Bobby Lashley:
Lashley’s emphatic win over Reigns at Extreme Rules recently raised one or two eyebrows. Reigns had been almost undisputed as WWE’s top figure for the last couple of years – with or without a title – so there seemed no other outcome to his feud with Lashley other than a win for the man packing the Superman Punch. With a victory over him under his belt, might Lashley come again for Reigns and insist gold be up for grabs?
Braun Strowman
Arguably the more obvious candidate is The Monster Among Men. He dismissed Kevin Owens in freakishly short order at SummerSlam and threatened to cash-in on whoever had won the main event between Reigns and Lesnar. Lesnar took Strowman out of the game before himself being beaten by Reigns, so it may be just a matter of time before the Money in the Bank contract winner comes to cash-in.
Finn Balor
Finn Balor has been undermining the authority of Raw’s Constable, Baron Corbin, for many weeks and – not for the first time – picked up a win over him at SummerSlam as we witnessed the return of the Demon. That, for some, may be telling. It was a couple of years prior at the biggest event of the summer that Balor became the first ever Universal Champion in New York before being forced to surrender through injury the next night. Now, with the Demon back in the frame, might Balor look to come for what he never lost and reclaim his title at Reigns’ expense?
Dolph Ziggler
You’d be hard pressed to find a more menacing duo on Raw than Dolph Ziggler and his sinister chum Drew McIntyre. While Ziggler lost his Intercontinental title at Summerslam to Seth Rollins, there’s little doubt that the Show Off fancies himself as Raw’s very best talent. With the dominant if slightly maniacal McIntyre in his corner, Ziggler could look to quickly console himself after the loss of one item of gold by going in search of another. Could he be the one to step up?
